Propane on the move in EV thermal systems

Sensata Technologies has launched a combined pressure and temperature sensor designed for vehicle manufacturers adopting R290 (propane) refrigerant in electrified vehicle thermal management systems.

Sensata said interest in R290 is growing as OEMs look at low global warming potential (GWP) and PFAS-free refrigerant options, citing its efficiency, system cost benefits and low environmental impact. It also noted R290’s flammability and strict leakage requirements create new design considerations for EV thermal systems.

Pressure and temperature sensing plays a key role in monitoring refrigerant conditions, supporting HVAC and heat pump control and helping manufacturers meet leakage, safety and regulatory requirements.

The R290 P+T sensor combines both measurements in a single unit, which Sensata says improves system control and diagnostics in complex EV thermal architectures. The company says its leakage-optimised design helps minimise refrigerant loss over the vehicle’s life. The sensor is available with analog or LIN output.

It is designed for automotive air conditioning and thermal management systems in battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and other electrified platforms using R290.

“Our customers are navigating a fundamental shift in refrigerant technologies as they work to meet evolving environmental and performance requirements,” said Markus Schwabe, President, Automotive at Sensata Technologies.
