Penrite has been named the VIC/TAS winner of the Legacy Family Business Award at the 2026 Family Business Excellence Awards, presented by Family Business Association on 7 October.

The award recognises multi-generational family businesses that show enduring success, strong family values, sustainable growth and a lasting contribution to their communities. It caps off a big year for Penrite, which is celebrating 100 years in business in 2026.

Margaret, Fleur, Jon, Sam and Roland Dymond accepted the award on behalf of the family and the wider Penrite team.

Founded in 1926, Penrite was acquired by John “JD” and Margaret Dymond in 1979. Since then it has grown from a local lubricant manufacturer into a leading Australian automotive business, while staying family owned.

Penrite CEO Toby Dymond said the award was a meaningful acknowledgement of the family’s legacy and the people behind the business.

“Winning the Legacy Family Business Award in our 100th year is an incredibly proud moment for the Dymond family and everyone at Penrite. Our journey has always been about more than building a successful business. It’s about the values passed down through generations, the people who have stood beside us and our commitment to manufacturing quality products right here in Australia.

“This recognition honours the legacy of those who came before us, particularly my father, John ‘JD’ Dymond, and my brother Mark Dymond. It reinforces our responsibility to continue building a strong, innovative Australian business for future generations.”

Margaret Dymond a finalist for Leading Woman in Family Business

Margaret Dymond was also named a finalist for the Leading Woman in Family Business Award. The nomination recognises more than four decades helping guide Penrite’s growth, along with her commitment to Australian manufacturing and grassroots motorsport.

“Penrite has always been much more than a business to our family. It’s been a lifetime of hard work, determination and wonderful people who have helped us along the way. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and especially proud to see the next generation carrying those same values forward,” Ms Dymond said.

“I’ve always believed that success comes from looking after your people, staying true to your values and never being afraid to give something a go.”

National awards in 2027

Penrite now moves on to the national stage, where regional winners will be considered for the overall Legacy Family Business Award. Ms Dymond will also be in contention for the national Leading Woman in Family Business Award.

The overall winners will be announced at the Family Business Conference: Asia-Pacific in Darwin, from 1 to 4 June 2027.
