Fanless 20A smart charger from R&J Batteries

After three years of development, R&J Batteries has released a fanless 20A smart charger for lead acid and lithium batteries, with a power supply mode for diagnostic work.

R&J Batteries has released the REDMAX RMBC1220 Smart Battery Charger, a fanless 12V charger for lead acid and lithium iron phosphate batteries, now the flagship of the REDMAX range.

The charger was developed over more than three years of research, development and testing, in collaboration with one of R&J’s manufacturing partners. R&J says it set out to fill a gap in the market for a high performance charger at a competitive price, with a focus on efficiency, versatility and long term reliability.

“The REDMAX RMBC1220 development project started 3 years ago with a list of ‘must have’ design features,” said Tim Lennon, Product & Technical Manager at R&J Batteries.

Mr Lennon said the final charger met all of those requirements and was designed to address common failure points in other chargers. He said it also combined a clean design with simple operation.

A key design feature is the cooling. Instead of a fan, the RMBC1220 uses its extruded aluminium case to dissipate heat from the internal components.

R&J says removing the fan takes away a part that can eventually fail, which helps improve durability and longevity. It also means the charger runs quietly. The case is IP65 rated, making it suited to workshop and garage environments.

The charger uses high efficiency switchmode technology and microprocessor controlled multistage charging, with dedicated profiles for lead acid and lithium iron phosphate batteries. Charging current is selectable at 1A, 3A, 7A, 12A or 20A, giving the one unit range across small and large batteries.

Depending on battery type, the charging process runs through up to seven stages: BMS wake up for lithium batteries, initialise and soft start, bulk, absorb, analysis, recondition (or equalise) and float.

For workshop use, the charger also includes a Power Supply Mode with adjustable current. R&J says this helps stabilise vehicle system voltage during diagnosis and testing.

Key features include:

  • Fanless design with extruded aluminium case
  • High efficiency switchmode technology
  • Microprocessor controlled seven stage charging
  • Selectable current of 1A, 3A, 7A, 12A or 20A
  • Dedicated lead acid and lithium iron phosphate profiles
  • IP65 rated case
  • Power Supply Mode for diagnostics
  • Five year warranty

The RMBC1220 is designed for both professional and home workshops and is backed by a five year warranty.

It is available exclusively through R&J Batteries stores and distributors, where the team can talk through the charger and its features.
