The tyre servicing qualification just had its first safety overhaul in years

Tyre servicing qualification gets national safety update. The Certificate II in Automotive Tyre Servicing Technology has been updated following a national review, with Skills Ministers endorsing the changes and the new version now live on the National Training Register.

The review, run by AUSMASA, found the existing qualification did not properly cover the hazards specific to tyre, wheel and rim work and had not kept pace with current Australian safety standards. It also found a gap in how the qualification showed up on paper. Workers completing a specialisation within the certificate were not having that specialisation identified on their credentials, meaning it was possible for someone to be placed into higher risk work without the specific skills that work needs.

The updated qualification, now AUR21926, addresses both issues. It brings in current safety requirements, drops outdated practices and extends coverage to agricultural equipment, which the previous version did not include. Specialisations will now be clearly shown on certificates and statements of attainment, giving workshops a clearer picture of what a new hire or apprentice is actually qualified to do.

As part of the wider AUR Automotive, Retail, Service and Repair Training Package, 16 units of competency were updated, 2 new units were developed and 15 qualifications were updated in total.

The changes followed national consultation with employers, RTOs, unions, peak bodies, regulators and government stakeholders across every state and territory, with the updated products checked against anti-discrimination requirements before being signed off.
