More EVs on the road means more EVs on your hoists

Electric vehicles accounted for almost one in three new cars sold in Australia in July, according to Electric Vehicle Council data, with combined battery-electric and plug-in hybrid sales reaching a record 32.2 per cent of new car sales. Battery electric vehicles alone made up 22.3 per cent of sales, more than tripling the 7.2 per cent recorded in July last year.

The national EV fleet has now reached an estimated 650,000 vehicles, around three per cent of cars on Australian roads and year to date EVs have secured 26.7 per cent of the total new vehicle market, more than double the 12 per cent share recorded over the same period last year.

For workshops, the brand and model breakdown is arguably more useful than the headline figure. BYD was Australia’s second-largest-selling brand overall in July and the Tesla Model Y series led EV sales specifically, followed by the BYD Sealion 7, Geely EX5 and Zeekr 7X, a spread that points to a fleet diversifying well beyond the handful of models workshops have historically had to know inside out.

Electric Vehicle Council CEO Julie Delvecchio said the trend showed no signs of slowing, noting that EV sales remained well ahead of last year’s figures across all car types and price points.

The practical takeaway for workshops is straightforward, the vehicles making up close to a third of new car sales today are the vehicles that will be filling service bays in growing numbers over the coming years. Workshops that build EV diagnostic and servicing capability now are positioning themselves ahead of a shift that’s no longer coming, it’s already here.
